About The Position

The Program Counsellors are responsible for developing and implementing the HYPE Summer Camp (Helping Youth Pursue Excellence) program, including supervision of clients (children). Camp activities range from focusing on healthy child development to sports and recreation programming. To be eligible for this position through the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, you must: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; or have completed a diploma or a degree; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Requirements

  • Proof of attending post-secondary education as of September 2026 or have completed a diploma or degree
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Proven ability to take direction and work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Current Criminal Reference Check (including Vulnerable Sector Screening), if in the age range of 18-30.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for this position (DCHC will however adhere to its duty to accommodate those who are unable to be fully vaccinated for a reason related to a human rights protected ground).

Responsibilities

  • Plan camp activities, educational programs, and community events.
  • Encourage and support participation of all participants in camp activities.
  • Conduct public relations activities as needed.
  • Ensure acceptable levels of safety and behaviour at camp.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Participate in evaluating camp programs.
  • Provide support and accommodations for campers with diverse needs, including those with disabilities, language barriers, or other challenges.
  • Ensure all campers feel welcome and included regardless of their background, abilities, or identities.
  • Implement activities and strategies that promote inclusivity and respect for diversity.
  • Other duties as required.
