About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking an Assistant Day Camp Coordinator for the Canada Summer Jobs program. This role involves assisting with the operation of a day camp, leading various activities such as music, sports, games, and crafts, and supervising campers. The coordinator will work with other staff to implement programming, build positive relationships with children, and role model appropriate behaviors. Responsibilities also include maintaining a tidy and safe camp environment, ensuring the health and safety of all participants, and supporting the emotional and personal development of campers. The position requires adherence to Salvation Army policies and procedures, as well as OH&S Act and Regulations. Communication, documentation, and reporting are key aspects of the role, including creating and maintaining health and safety compliance reports.

Requirements

Minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a day camp setting working with children.
Excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing).
Must have own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online.
Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change.
Ability to learn quickly and use initiative.
Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively.
Able to help support other camp staff with children’s individual behavioral needs.

Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.

Applicants must meet Canada Summer Jobs program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. Individuals who require employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Responsibilities

Assist with the operation of the day camp and lead various camp activities including music, sports, recreational games, crafts, and other scheduled events.
Supervise, interact with, and support all Day Camp campers.
Work cooperatively with the Day Camp Coordinator, Day Camp Counsellors, and Behavioral Support Worker to help coordinate and implement all programming for the Oshawa Temple Salvation Army Summer Day Camp Program.
Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth.
Role model appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
Ensure that the Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.
Clearly communicate directions for program activities.
Document process, and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
Support external reporting requests as needed.
Perform other related duties as required.
