About The Position

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and requires applicants to meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. The role involves monitoring campers with specific needs, implementing behavior management techniques, and collaborating with program staff to support campers. The specialist will also assist with risk management, camper application reviews, and serve as a role model for appropriate behavior. The position emphasizes ensuring the health, safety, and emotional well-being of campers, aligning with The Salvation Army's mission and values.

Requirements

  • Completed a minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education in health science, social services, or recreation administration.
  • Completion of Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI) training is required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience working with behaviorally challenged children.
  • Experience with encouraging and assisting others in supporting children and their behavioral needs.
  • Able to handle difficult situations with maturity and the ability to adapt if necessary.
  • Able to implement behavioral supports during the day-to-day camp program operations.
  • Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change.
  • Ability to learn quickly and use initiative.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively.
  • Able to help support other camp staff with children’s individual behavioral needs.
  • A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.

Nice To Haves

  • A current valid, Standard First Aid and CPR Certification is an asset.
  • Previous experience in a camp setting is an asset.
  • Pass applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Monitor campers with needs/concerns using developmentally appropriate teaching and child behavior management techniques.
  • Work with program staff to facilitate a plan to support camper needs, providing strategies and teaching protocols/procedures on behavioral supports.
  • Assist with effective risk management and complete required reports, including incident reports.
  • Review camper applications and medical forms, assist with cabin allocations, and provide information on camper needs.
  • Role model appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
  • Perform other relevant duties such as camp set-up and cleanup.
  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
  • Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.
  • Document processes, reports, and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
  • Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
