About The Position

The Day Camp Counsellor - Recreation will assist the Day Camp Coordinator in all areas of operating the day camp program. They will encourage, support, respect, and demonstrate a positive, caring, energetic, attitude towards all who attend the day camps and other staff members while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith.

Requirements

  • Completed a minimum of grade nine (9).
  • Up to 1 year of experience working directly with children in a day camp setting
  • Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing)
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Organized, hardworking, dedicated, creative, and possess leadership qualities.
  • Able to work well independently and in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change.
  • Ability to learn quickly and use initiative.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement.

  • Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry etc.).
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • A valid Social Insurance Number.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of secondary school is preferred.
  • Current, valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification or willingness to obtain would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement a 5-week day camp program for children aged 6-11, with an administrative team.
  • Works with the Day Camp Coordinator and other camp staff in planning and implementing camp.
  • Responsible for the day camp logistics and lead various camp activities including (but not limited to) music, sports, recreational games, crafts, and other scheduled events.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective training, support, and supervision of camp volunteers.
  • Oversee engagement of volunteers and their activities.
  • Clearly communicate directions for program activities.
  • Document processes and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
  • Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth.
  • Chaperone children on field trips and stay with assigned groups during field trips as required.
  • Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings
  • Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
  • Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.
  • Document processes, report as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
  • Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
