About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Day Camp Counsellor-Recreation to assist the Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in facilitating the development and behavior of children. This role involves implementing programs, ensuring health and safety, and building meaningful relationships with children. The position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and requires adherence to The Salvation Army's mission and values.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school is required.
  • 18 years of age or older (Canada Summer Job age requirement: between the age of 18-30 years of age).
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of their summer job.
  • Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed.
  • Updated Medical completed.
  • Must maintain a current, valid Standard First Aid & Level C C.P.R. Certificate.
  • Complete all on-line The Salvation Army courses immediately upon hiring.
  • Up to one year of related experience.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, including Child Check (if appropriate).
  • Review of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required processed within 6 months of hire.
  • Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse registry.
  • The Salvation Army abuse training & online health & safety must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
  • Ability to communicate in a kind, peaceful manner, stay calm and patient.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to conduct self professionally and follow policies and procedures and use code of ethics to guide practice.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain required professional certifications and/or registrations and keep up to date with legislative requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the development and behavior of children using observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of children, promoting acceptance of diversity.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs, including adapting programming and equipment to unique settings and situations.
  • Implement inclusion policy and evaluate age-appropriate programs.
  • Administer medication as directed.
  • Implement preventative health and safety measures, including safe travelling and off-site practices with adequate supervision.
  • Establish an environment that fosters positive behavior.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • Advocate for children and families.
  • Review safety-related issues.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.

  • Facilitate appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem-solving skills, and coping skills.
  • Use and promote active listening skills.
  • Protect children from physical and emotional harm.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and furnishings.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.
  • Assist the RECE with required record keeping as assigned.
  • Attend parent meetings, staff meetings, and other job-related activities.
  • Fulfill all other related duties as assigned.
