About The Position

The Child Care Support Worker II role is focused on providing a wholesome, safe, and happy learning environment for all children through modelling the example of Jesus. Responsible for assisting the Early Childhood Educators in organizing, planning, and implementing a program that is responsive to the spiritual, social, physical, emotional, educational, and recreational needs of each child under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Assistant Director and the Director. Along with the ECE, ensure all activities are age appropriate and co-constructed in such a way as to provide an effective and safe learning and development experience for every child while intentionally reflecting the mission of Small Blessings.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school is required.
  • Valid Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate of up to one year of academic studies.
  • Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Must complete the mandatory provincial curriculum training and hold certification required by the province.
  • Up to one year of related experience.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.
  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
  • Ability to communicate in kind, peaceful manner, stay calm and patient.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to conduct self professionally and follow policies and procedures and use code of ethics to guide practice.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain required professional certifications and/or registrations and keep up to date with legislative requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating the development and behaviour of children by using a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitating cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of children and acceptance of diversity.
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating programs.
  • Implementing inclusion policy and evaluating age-appropriate program.
  • Administering medication as directed.
  • Implementing preventative health and safety measures
  • Implementing safe travelling and off-site practices while providing adequate supervision during these times maintaining documentation of child’s development.
  • Establishing an environment to foster positive behaviour in the program.
  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle.
  • Adapting programming and equipment to unique settings and situations.
  • Advocating for children and families.
  • Reviewing safety-related issues.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with the children.
  • Meet health, welfare and safety needs.
  • Accommodate for children’s allergies.
  • Provide first-aid and CPR when required.
  • Follow safe toileting and diapering procedures.
  • Identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Actively supervise, guide and observe children at all times.
  • Promote healthy eating and proper food serving techniques.
  • Accommodate for special nutritional requirements.
  • Model and teach proper table manners.
  • Guide children’s behaviour by using positive guidance techniques.
  • Facilitate appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem-solving skills and coping skills.
  • Use and promote active listening skills.
  • Protect children from physical and emotional harm.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and furnishings.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.
  • Assist Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) with required record keeping as assigned.
  • Attendance at parent meetings, staff meetings and other job-related activities will be part and parcel of this job description and the agreed salary.
  • Fulfill all other related duties as assigned.
