About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking Summer Students to work cooperatively with the staff of Surrey Ministries to promote holistic care for families within Surrey. This role involves leading biblical games, crafts, and stories, and engaging with program participants in ways that represent the organization's values of dignity, service, stewardship, and hope. The Day Camp Counsellor will design, plan, promote, and implement a summer day camp enrichment program, including specialized programming for kindergarten, elementary, and youth. A key aspect of the role is building relationships with and providing competent supervision to children and youth, collaborating with other staff and volunteers to ensure a positive and inclusive camp experience.

Requirements

  • First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Background check consent.
  • Responsible Adult Certification.
  • Completion of TSA online Presidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
  • Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Experience working with children, knowledge of child development and ways to engage learners in various activities and environments.
  • Experience leading children through Vacation Bible School material.
  • Ability to share Christian faith through various activities (craft, story time, interaction, etc).
  • Teamwork skills needed to interact with other people, work with others in pairs and small and large groups to coordinate tasks, share resources, plan, make decisions, negotiate, solve conflicts, and complete other activities that involve teamwork.
  • Adaptability - the ability to adjust goals and behaviors when unexpected changes occur by planning, staying focused, persisting, and overcoming setbacks.
  • Collaboration - contributing and supporting others to achieve a common goal.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead the daily themed artistic and creative hands-on components of the day camp experience.
  • Coordinate and lead various group or individual projects and activities with the campers.
  • Provide open-ended activities for the early arrivers at camp each morning.
  • Assist with recreational programming at local parks.
  • Clean up and set up of activities, both indoor and outdoor.
  • Encourage campers to participate wholeheartedly whenever possible.
  • Assist with the registration process.
  • Preparation of supplies.
  • Managing the indoor/outdoor environment to ensure appropriate health and safety requirements are met.
  • Interaction with parents, coaching children, and communication with teammates is required throughout.
  • Dealing with behavioural concerns of children and youth if they arise during program participation at day camp in conjunction with the Program Coordinator.
  • Participate in staff debriefing meetings.
