About The Position

The Data Custodian Manager establishes and maintains the processes, standards, and operating procedures used by the Data Custodian team to ensure consistent intake, triage, remediation, and data quality work across supported data domains. The role coordinates custodians across multiple data areas, promotes adherence to enterprise data governance standards, and drives operational consistency as the function grows. The manager owns an assigned data domain and performs hands-on individual-contributor work while providing leadership, guidance, and day-to-day coordination for the broader team. The position develops and maintains playbooks, checklists, and governance processes, applies enterprise standards and tools in partnership with the Data Office, supports escalations, identifies systemic issues, and contributes to sustainable data quality solutions. It partners with Business Data Stewards, IT, and Data Engineering to put business rules and quality thresholds into practice and ensure pipeline and automation logic reflects field conditions. The role also monitors data quality and confirms the completeness and usability of division data before it goes live on DRIVE. This is a hybrid position based at Republic Services’ headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, with four days per week onsite and one day remote. It is not eligible to be fully remote and is not sponsorship eligible.

Requirements

  • Four to seven years of experience in a data analyst, data quality, data operations, data steward, or data custodian-type role.
  • Demonstrated success in a hands-on data custodian, data steward, data quality analyst, or similar role within a large or matrixed organization.
  • Experience defining or improving a team workflow, such as intake, triage, or issue resolution, and documenting it for consistent use.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or onboarding team members while remaining hands-on in the work.
  • A track record of investigating and resolving data-quality issues against business rules, thresholds, and quality dimensions such as completeness, validity, accuracy, timeliness, and reasonableness.
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud-based data platforms and governance technologies.
  • A history of partnering with business, operations, and IT teams to maintain accurate field data as an organization scales a program or platform.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience leading a small team or coordinating the work of other individual contributors.
  • Snowflake experience.
  • Experience in fleet management, routing and logistics, waste and environmental services, or another field-operations-heavy industry.
  • Familiarity with route optimization concepts such as service windows, container or asset attributes, and driver scheduling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Custodian team by setting priorities, providing day-to-day direction and coaching, onboarding new custodians, addressing escalated or cross-area issues, and overseeing team performance.
  • Manage an assigned data area, investigate suspect or flagged values, determine correct values using source systems and business context, and carry corrections through to the system of record.
  • Serve as the single intake point for field reports and data change requests in the assigned area, ensuring records are corrected through a controlled process rather than direct edits in source systems.
  • Triage issues as working as intended, a data fix, a rule or definition question, or a systemic or enabler gap.
  • Define, document, and maintain standard intake, triage, and correction processes for Data Custodians, updating them as data areas, systems, and interim workflows change.
  • Ensure the team applies processes consistently across data subject areas, stewards, and source systems in line with Enterprise Data Office objectives and methods.
  • Partner with Business Data Stewards to translate business rules and quality thresholds into practical, repeatable data checks and share effective patterns across the team.
  • Work with IT and Data Engineering to ensure pipeline and automation logic reflects real operating conditions in the field.
  • Monitor completeness, accuracy, validity, timeliness, and reasonableness of assigned attributes against defined thresholds; review measures across data areas to identify process gaps.
  • Confirm data completeness and usability for a division before it goes live on DRIVE.
  • Escalate recurring or systemic data gaps to technical or business teams for long-term resolution and identify needed process changes.
  • Maintain clear, current documentation of the custodian process and how data is created, changed, and corrected in the assigned area.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
