About The Position

The cytotechnologist must have extensive knowledge in preparing, staining and evaluating gynecological and non-gynecological material including fine needle aspirations. Must be competent with assessing all material with a high level of accuracy. Must show good judgement with attention to details as well as respect for patient confidentiality. The cytotechnologist must work professionally and courteously with physicians, patients, guests and other employees.

Requirements

  • Cytotechnology and pathology knowledge are paramount.
  • Medical terminology is also required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to break down problems or tasks; scanning one’s own knowledge and experience to identify causes and consequences of events.
  • Must be able to utilize both laboratory and hospital computer systems.
  • Will be adept at utilizing computer word processing, spreadsheets, and email programs.
  • Must fulfill one of the following requirements: 1) Must be a graduate of an accredited school of cytotechnology. 2) Prior to 9/1/1992 completed 2 years in an accredited institution and 12 months of formal cytology training from an approved school of cytotechnology. 3) Prior to 9/1/1992 achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists. 4) Prior to 9/1/1994 have 2 years’ full time experience or equivalent within the preceding 5 years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology. Also 6 months’ cytology training and 2 years of supervised full time experience in cytology.
  • Cytology certification or eligible by an approved HHS agency (ASCP or IAC).
  • Individuals who are ASCP certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program.

  • Graduate of accredited school of cytotechnology and bachelor’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs processing, staining and coverslipping of various types of cytologic material.
  • Assists with fine needle aspiration immediate evaluation and procurement.
  • Performs clerical duties including entering data into computers, answering phones, and distribution of reports.
  • Monitors quality assurance.
  • Works with others in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Assists with training and teaching of students, residents, and others.
  • Completely and correctly screens and interprets cytologic specimens.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
