This role involves preparing cellular specimens, examining them using light microscopy, and reporting any abnormalities discovered. The Cytotechnologist performs microscopic screening and interpretations of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, including retrieving clinical history, referring abnormal smears to a pathologist, interpreting abnormal results with the pathologist, and recording, coding, and reporting diagnoses. They also rescreen a percentage of negative high-risk cases, assist with special procedures like fine needle aspirations, and provide instruction to pathology residents. The role requires staying updated on new techniques and methods in cytology.
