Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree with formal training from a CAHEA-accredited school of Cytotechnology.
  • Licensed as a Cytotechnologist under the New York State Department of Education.
  • Certified in Cytotechnology by certifying agency approved by HHS (ASCP).
  • Thinprep Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in performing Rapid On-Site Evaluation procedures preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years Cytotechnologist experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Following departmental protocol, perform Rapid On-Site Evaluations of FNA specimens to determine specimen adequacy independently and/ or by collaborating with a Pathologist.
  • Microscopically examine slide preparations for cytologic evaluation, correlating clinical information with morphologic findings to make a final diagnosis on negative gynecologic slides and render a microscopic evaluation on abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic pending diagnosis by pathologist.
  • Microscopically examine slides thoroughly and systematically, evaluate the adequacy of specimens for diagnostic purposes; consider quantity, quality, and preservation of cellular material; evaluate cytopathologic observations as it relates to specimen source and advise supervisor or pathologist on non-conformities.
  • Capable of troubleshooting test anomalies and system problems in a logical manner to ensure accurate testing.
  • Respond to supply and equipment issues in a timely manner to ensure optimum operations and equipment quality. Ensure supplies are well stocked, and communicate supply needs.
  • Follow the laboratory’s pre-analytic and analytic procedures.
  • Adhere to NYSDOH workload limits and maintains workload records.
  • Adhere to the department's quality control policies and ensure documentation of all quality control activities, instrument, and maintenance performed.
  • Establish and implement service priorities, workflow patterns; monitor workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services.
