CV/ML Generalist Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

Apple is seeking a creative, versatile Computer Vision and Machine Learning (CVML) Generalist Engineer to join a team of researchers and engineers building generative machine-learning systems and frameworks for image and video generation, with a focus on human subjects. The role is in a fast-paced, startup-like environment and involves helping the team scale through smart engineering and AI-driven tools, while working with cross-functional partners on algorithms and systems for next-generation Apple products. The engineer will build and improve image and video generation models, algorithms, and systems, especially for human subjects, and own vision-based systems end to end from prototype through production. The work includes building new technology, maintaining existing systems, and using AI and coding tools to work efficiently. The successful candidate will be self-driven, take ownership, communicate effectively across organizational levels, and bring strong computer vision and machine-learning foundations alongside hands-on experience with agentic workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field and at least 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of machine learning and deep learning.
  • Experience building and evaluating LLM/VLM-powered agents, including tool use, multi-step reasoning, planning, and context management.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++, and experience with a deep learning framework such as PyTorch or JAX.
  • High agency, including taking ownership and driving work forward independently.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication skills.
  • Deep experience in two or more of the following areas: generative CV/ML research and algorithm development, especially image and video synthesis; large-scale end-to-end computer vision systems built with AI coding agents; human-centric computer vision problems such as digital humans, motion synthesis, body tracking, or generative avatars; neural rendering or world models.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Deep expertise in computer vision and machine learning, with a strong focus on deep generative models such as GANs, VAEs, and diffusion models.
  • Knowledge of modern vision data visualization methods, such as 3D Gaussian Splatting and neural volume rendering.
  • Familiarity with modern graphics technology for high-fidelity 3D human generation, such as photogrammetry, computational hair modeling, physics-based hair or cloth simulation, or physically based shading.
  • Published research in top-tier computer vision conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, or NeurIPS, or other leading forums, demonstrating contributions to computer vision and machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve image and video generation models, algorithms, and systems, especially for human subjects.
  • Own vision-based systems end to end, from prototype to production.
  • Build new technology and maintain existing systems, using AI tools and coding tools to work faster.
  • Work with researchers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to turn research into product-ready solutions.
