About The Position

The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is seeking a compassionate, energetic, and customer-focused Customer Service Representative for its Lifesaving Programs team. As the first point of contact for visitors, adopters, foster families, volunteers, and pet owners, this role helps create positive experiences while supporting APS’s mission of protecting and improving the lives of animals in the community. The position involves assisting with adoptions and lost-pet reclaims, responding to inquiries, maintaining records, processing transactions, and supporting shelter operations and community outreach.

• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a busy shelter environment.
• Availability to work weekends and flexible schedules based on operational needs.

Nice To Haves

• Previous animal shelter, veterinary, rescue, or animal welfare experience.
• Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Experience with Chameleon or similar shelter management software.
• Knowledge of animal behavior and positive reinforcement practices.

Responsibilities

• Help families through the adoption process.
• Assist pet owners with reclaiming lost pets.
• Answer phones, emails, and visitor inquiries professionally and compassionately.
• Educate people about responsible pet ownership and available community resources.
• Maintain accurate records and process transactions.
• Collaborate with Animal Care, Medical, Behavior, and Volunteer teams to support shelter operations.
• Assist with special events, promotions, and community outreach efforts.
