About The Position

The Custodian performs custodial work to care for, maintain, protect, and preserve the school plant, its contents, and grounds. The position cleans and maintains classrooms, offices, specialized rooms, restrooms, hallways, stairways, auditoriums, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other school areas, completing minor repairs as needed. Duties also include maintaining supplies, monitoring building access and heating and cooling conditions, inspecting facilities, and reporting repair or equipment needs to the building principal. State law requires state and national criminal history background checks and a child abuse/neglect (CAN) check as a condition of employment.

Requirements

Six months of relevant experience in custodial work.
Knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general custodial work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in general custodial work.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Must pass state and national criminal history background checks and a child abuse/neglect (CAN) check as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Clean classrooms, departmental offices, the teachers’ lunchroom, and guidance suite; perform minor repairs as needed.
Clean and maintain desks, chairs, tables, floors, carpets, windows, doors, furniture, fixtures, blinds, and other classroom surfaces.
Clean and disinfect restrooms, replenish paper products and soap, and perform minor repairs.
Clean and maintain stairways, entrance halls, hallways, lockers, drinking fountains, floors, and related fixtures.
Clean and maintain music rooms, home economics areas, shop areas, administrative offices, kitchens, workrooms, storage areas, furnace rooms, and medical rooms.
Clean locker rooms, physical education rooms, and offices.
Clean and maintain the auditorium, including floors, seating, stage and backstage areas, doors, windows, and fixtures.
Clean and maintain the cafeteria or commons area, including furniture, trophy-case glass, pictures, plaques, and overhangs.
Clean and maintain the gymnasium, including the floor, bleachers, windows, fixtures, and drinking fountains.
Inform the school principal about repairs that are beyond the custodian’s capability.
Keep outside walkways, steps, and sidewalks free from ice, snow, and debris.
Maintain sufficient cleaning supplies and inform the building principal of supply and equipment needs.
Ensure entrances are locked or unlocked at the appropriate times according to the building principal’s directions.
Replace broken window glass.
Inspect heating and cooling facilities daily and report needed repairs or replacements to the building principal.
Ensure classroom, office, and other area temperatures remain between 68 and 72°F during the school day and activity sessions before and after school.
Check the sewage disposal unit for unwanted debris and proper operation, if appropriate.
Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.
