About The Position

The Custodian performs cleaning and related maintenance tasks to provide staff, students, and visitors with a safe, clean environment and to maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and freedom from hazards in buildings and grounds. The position includes cleaning and caring for floors, classrooms, restrooms, offices, furnishings, and equipment; handling custodial supplies and waste; and reporting maintenance problems or damage. The role may also involve outdoor duties. Evening or weekend work, extended hours, and irregular shifts may be required.

Requirements

Valid state driver's license.
Must pass a background check with no prior felony convictions.
Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets/HASMAT.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
Skill in using cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
Ability to communicate effectively in Navajo and English.
Ability to safely use cleaning products and operate cleaning equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to learn methods for cleaning and caring for buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Ability to work as a team member in a structured working environment.
Able to stand for prolonged periods and walk and sit; use hands with dexterity; stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch; and have normal auditory and visual acuity and verbal communication skills.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma preferred.
Six months of related experience preferred.
CPR/First Responder Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Sweep, clean, mop, scrub, wax, and dust floors.
Clean, disinfect, and sanitize classrooms, chalkboards, buildings, hotel rooms, and offices.
Clean toilets, basins, showers, bathtubs, and walls; restock restroom supplies; wash windows; and dust, clean, and vacuum furniture, fixtures, doors, and related furnishings using appropriate cleaning supplies.
Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment and supplies.
Empty trash receptacles and bag trash for proper disposal.
Report malfunctioning bathroom or light fixtures and damage to room or hall furnishings to a supervisor.
Lock and unlock doors as directed.
Move furniture, equipment, and fixtures as required.
Operate and maintain electric floor machines, snow blowers, industrial vacuums, carpet shampooing equipment, and upholstery shampooing equipment.
Clean, refinish, and maintain a variety of floor coverings.
Transport custodial supplies and equipment to and from storage and work areas.
Perform other duties as assigned.
