About The Position

The Custodian maintains a clean and safe working environment for staff and visitors at the Salvation Army building and grounds in Salisbury, Maryland. The role includes housekeeping, sanitation, groundskeeping, basic building maintenance, and assistance with events and deliveries. This is a regular, part-time, non-exempt position for 28 hours per week, paying $15.00 per hour. The Custodian cleans and sanitizes bathrooms and other areas, maintains floors, windows, furniture, fixtures, storage areas, and grounds, and helps with minor repairs, painting, and building maintenance. The position may also involve operating a Salvation Army vehicle to pick up or deliver items or transport passengers, helping unload supplies and donations, and setting up meeting rooms for events. Work takes place indoors and outdoors and involves frequent physical activity, including lifting and carrying more than 50 pounds, standing, walking, climbing, bending, and reaching. The role may require working in extreme heat or cold and exposure to weather, noise, chemicals, equipment, vehicles, electrical currents, moving mechanical parts, and high places.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and one year of experience performing general housekeeping duties, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials, supplies, and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.
Ability to frequently stand, walk, climb ladders or steps, bend, and reach.
Ability to transport merchandise and supplies regularly.
Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive housekeeping, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks.
Valid state driver's license preferred.

Responsibilities

Clean and sanitize bathrooms, sinks, and toilets; polish mirrors and replenish supplies.
Sweep, vacuum, mop, strip, buff, and wax floors.
Clean windows and dust and polish furniture and fixtures.
Empty trash cans daily, collect trash from the grounds, and sweep outside walkways.
Maintain the boiler room, laundry room, maintenance closets, and storage areas in clean and orderly condition.
Assist with building maintenance, painting, and repair work.
Use the Salvation Army vehicle to pick up or deliver miscellaneous items or transport passengers as needed.
Set up tables and chairs for meeting rooms and special events.
Help keep the grounds and roof free of trash and leaves, and cut grass or twigs.
Assist the public and staff with unloading supplies and donations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
