Custodian
About The Position
Under direct supervision, the Custodian provides specialized janitorial services and light maintenance for the program’s main location. The role keeps the facility clean and sanitized throughout the day, maintains a hazard-free facility and grounds, opens and closes the facility at designated times, and helps ensure compliance with applicable building and regulatory requirements. Tasks are assigned through an automated work order system by the supervisor. The position includes daily cleaning and sanitation, periodic deep cleaning, light repairs and maintenance, waste disposal, furniture handling, snow removal, and supply and equipment inventory. The Custodian also participates in required training and workshops, reports facility needs and vendor issues to appropriate staff, and performs other duties consistent with the position’s scope and applicable policies.
Requirements
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Knowledge of proper use of janitorial equipment, including waxing and buffing equipment, snow blowers, power washers, vacuum cleaners, brooms, and mops.
- Physical ability to perform cleaning tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

- Previous cleaning experience, especially in a school or childcare setting.
Responsibilities
- Participate in required in-service training and on-site workshops, and attend external training and workshops at management’s direction.
- Maintain and repair building interiors, exteriors, and grounds as instructed; conduct daily interior and exterior facility checks and report concerns or recommend work orders.
- Prevent hazards and support compliance with applicable regulations and codes.
- Clean the facility daily and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, common areas, and offices throughout the workday, including cleaning surfaces, windows, floors, fixtures, vents, toilets, sinks, and tiles.
- Perform assigned periodic deep-cleaning tasks, such as stripping and waxing floors, shampooing carpets, and deep-cleaning refrigerators.
- Perform assigned light maintenance, repairs, and improvements, including light carpentry, painting, unclogging drains, addressing minor leaks, installing electrical ballasts and light fixtures, and installing or repairing locks.
- Empty trash receptacles and dispose of or bag waste for proper disposal in compactors or dumpsters.
- Provide vendors access to areas as needed, answer basic questions, and report vendor issues to the supervisor.
- Unlock doors and ensure doors are locked after cleaning areas.
- Move, assemble, and disassemble furniture and other items as needed.
- Perform snow removal and salting when necessary.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment and recommend supply orders for supervisor approval.
- Use and maintain equipment and supplies properly, and promote workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Perform other job-related duties consistent with the position’s scope and applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
