About The Position

Project Renewal is hiring a Custodian for the Compass House Women’s Shelter, a 90-bed, 24/7 emergency shelter serving employable or employed homeless women. The Custodian works under the general direction of the Assistant Building Manager, Building Manager, and Program Director, performing daily cleaning and maintenance to help provide a clean and safe environment for shelter staff and clients. The shelter’s tentative opening is Winter 2026/2027.

Duties include janitorial work throughout sleeping areas, dining space, restrooms, stairwells, and public areas; garbage and recycling tasks; completing work orders and maintaining supplies; and performing other custodial duties as assigned. The position may involve exposure to unsanitary conditions, unpleasant odors, and concentrated hazardous chemicals, and requires following applicable safety protocols.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to walk between the facility’s six floors and around the facility exterior.
• Ability to stand, sit for extended periods at a computer, bend, reach, squat, climb and work from ladders 10 to 12 feet high, and lift at least 30 pounds.
• Excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills.
• Ability to work in a highly pressurized, deadline-driven environment while meeting short- and long-term program requirements.
• Ability to interact with clients and staff at all levels.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

• Bilingual or multilingual ability.
• Fire Guard Certification F-02 and/or Fire Safety Coordinator F-80.
• Ability to develop and foster team spirit, enabling staff to overcome challenges in providing services to clients.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain sleeping areas, dining space, restrooms, stairwells, and public areas.
• Perform janitorial tasks including power-washing, making repairs, replacing plumbing fittings and light bulbs, wiping lighting fixtures, waxing floors, mopping, sweeping, and operating a buffing machine.
• Perform garbage duties, including dumpster maintenance, metal sorting, and breaking down boxes for weekly pickup.
• Maintain rubber tiles on shelter stairs.
• Complete work orders promptly and provide detailed information about work performed and pertinent equipment information.
• Maintain appropriate levels of materials and supplies for assigned areas.
• Follow applicable safety protocols when working around unsanitary conditions, unpleasant odors, or hazardous concentrated chemicals.
• Perform duties specific to the assigned floor and other janitorial or custodial duties assigned by supervisory staff.
