About The Position

The Custodian keeps University buildings clean and orderly, supports special events, and performs other assigned duties that support Physical Plant operations and the University community. The role performs routine cleaning and maintenance in assigned areas according to departmental techniques and standards. Duties include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, replenishing supplies, removing trash, cleaning a range of campus spaces and surfaces, maintaining floors and carpets, replacing lamps, and making minor repairs. The Custodian also helps clean apartments and dorms during breaks, moves furniture and equipment, sets up and cleans up after events, and maintains entrances and nearby walks and steps, including snow and ice removal when necessary. The employee reports items needing repair and maintains cooperative working relationships with Physical Plant staff and the campus community.

Requirements

High school graduate or GED.
Ability to read procedure manuals, work orders, equipment operating instructions, and general correspondence.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, administration, and visitors.
Ability to read and accurately complete maintenance requests, timesheets, and supply requests.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic, including adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and multiplying and dividing with tens and hundreds, using American money and weight, volume, and distance measurements.
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member in a service-oriented environment with frequently changing priorities.
Good problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including standing, walking, working on one’s feet for several hours, bending, stooping, climbing ladders and stairs, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience in custodial or housekeeping services.
Prior experience with vacuum cleaners, buffers, burnishers, wet/dry vacuums, and other equipment.

Responsibilities

Perform routine cleaning and maintenance in assigned areas according to departmental techniques and standards.
Clean and sanitize restrooms daily, replenish supplies, dispose of trash, and clean and sanitize showers weekly.
Clean, vacuum, sweep, dust-mop, and wet-mop hallways, stairways, lounges, classrooms, computer rooms, labs, storage areas, entrances, entrance glass, offices, athletic surfaces, and/or the firing range.
Strip, scrub, apply floor finish, buff, burnish, and refinish hard-surface floors, and extract carpets according to MSSU custodial standards.
Replace fluorescent and incandescent lamps and make minor repairs such as tightening screws and lubricating doors.
Participate in cleaning apartments and dorms during breaks as directed by the supervisor.
Assist with moving furniture, supplies, and equipment as directed.
Set up, monitor, and clean up after special events.
Work overtime when directed.
Maintain outside entrances, walks, and steps within 20 feet of the building, including routine sweeping, snow and ice removal, and spreading ice melt when necessary.
Report items that need repair, including doors, furniture, equipment, and faucets.
Establish and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with Physical Plant members and the campus community.
