About The Position
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is hiring a Custodian to help ensure a pleasant and safe experience for guests and employees. The role maintains facility cleanliness, conscientiously follows the Gardens’ Community Agreements, and supports Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility principles. The Custodian works with indirect supervision and performs daily, event-related, and seasonal tasks. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week seasonal position through January 2, 2027. Longer-term employment may be possible. Compensation is $20.00–$22.00 per hour, non-exempt. Overtime may be available and/or required. The role participates in a rotating schedule supporting seven-day-per-week operations and after-hours events. Nights and at least one scheduled weekend day are required; some scheduling flexibility is available.
Requirements
- Keen attention to detail and a high standard of quality.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with guests, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Ability to work in a team environment and be aware of and accepting of teammates’ strengths and weaknesses.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain cleaning and general-maintenance hand tools, such as vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions regarding cleaning-product use.
- Ability to switch tasks on short notice and respond positively to emergency or urgent situations.
- Ability to follow directions, perform basic calculations, and demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and organizing.
- Basic computer literacy, including use of email and schedules.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 25 pounds, typically up one flight of stairs or to an outdoor venue.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in the full range of climatic conditions.
Responsibilities
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms using established practices and procedures.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers; wash accessible interior and exterior windows; clean blinds; wash walls and equipment; and collect recycling materials.
- Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Assist with setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.
- Maintain radio communication with Facilities and other internal teams.
- Assist with maintaining the organization and inventory control system.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings, secure facilities when not in use, check for unlocked doors and windows, report unauthorized occupants, and turn off lights.
- Perform seasonal cleaning and related activities, including removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
- Work safely from a ladder and perform frequent standing, walking, and repetitive cleaning motions.
