About The Position

The Junior Custodian helps maintain school buildings and grounds by opening and securing buildings, conducting safety, security, cleanliness, and fire-hazard inspections, and reporting maintenance or repair needs. The role includes standard maintenance of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment; cleaning and maintaining buildings, grounds, tools, and equipment; and assisting with custodial supply inventory and handling. The Junior Custodian also sets up furniture and equipment, replenishes restroom supplies, and performs other duties assigned by the building principal.

Responsibilities

Open and secure buildings.
Inspect buildings and grounds for safety, security, cleanliness, and fire hazards, including checking emergency-lighting battery fluid and other emergency equipment.
Contact Police and Fire Departments in emergency situations.
Observe energy conservation measures.
Determine and report maintenance or repair needs for machinery, equipment, buildings, and grounds.
Maintain, adjust, and perform standard maintenance on heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment and machinery.
Clean and lubricate tools and equipment.
Use hand tools and cleaning equipment, including floor polishers, rug shampooers, and vacuums.
Assist the senior custodian in determining supply quantities; requisition, issue, inventory, receive, pack, and store supplies.
Test and evaluate custodial products and outside services.
Collect and dispose of building trash.
Sweep, mop, wax, and seal floors; maintain and wash carpets; wash walls, furniture, windows, and equipment; and dust or polish pipes, equipment, furniture, and brass.
Shovel snow and apply sand or salt to grounds, catch basins, and overpasses; inspect and clean the perimeter of school buildings.
Set up furniture and equipment for classrooms, meetings, and conferences.
Replace light bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, and fuses, and routinely replenish restroom supplies.
Perform normal custodial duties outlined for Junior Building Custodians and other related duties assigned by the building principal.
