About The Position

The Custodian III helps keep YMCA facilities clean, safe, and welcoming for members, guests, staff, and the community. This is an active, hands-on role that involves cleaning and maintaining assigned areas throughout the facility, working independently and as part of a team, and following cleaning, equipment-use, and safety procedures. The position is based at the Hammond Family YMCA in Hammond, Indiana, and may require travel to other Crossroads YMCA branches within Lake County as needed. Pay starts at $14.25 per hour and may be higher based on experience. The work includes cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, common areas, floors, exercise-equipment areas, and other assigned spaces; handling housekeeping laundry; restocking supplies; and assisting with seasonal and general facility needs. Custodians use and maintain cleaning equipment, handle cleaning products and chemicals safely, identify and report hazards or maintenance issues, and complete minor repairs as directed. The role requires extended periods of standing and moving, and may involve lifting, bending, stooping, ladder use, and responding to unexpected cleaning needs. Schedules are flexible and may include afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years old.
Ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to read and understand cleaning instructions, procedures, manuals, and safety information.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Ability to travel to other Crossroads YMCA branches within Lake County as needed.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods; and occasionally stoop, bend, and use a ladder.
Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to safely perform custodial responsibilities.
Ability to safely work with cleaning products, solvents, and chemicals.
Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to maintain alertness, concentration, and initiative throughout the shift.
Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

Nice To Haves

Six months or more of related custodial or cleaning experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, floors, exercise-equipment areas, and other assigned spaces.
Mop, vacuum, dust, wash windows, remove trash, and perform general facility cleaning.
Complete housekeeping laundry as needed.
Refill disinfectant bottles and restock custodial closets and supplies.
Assist with seasonal responsibilities, including snow removal, and other general facility needs.
Follow daily cleaning schedules and checklists.
Safely use motorized and non-motorized cleaning equipment and properly handle cleaning products, chemicals, and supplies.
Help maintain assigned custodial equipment and work areas.
Identify and report repairs, maintenance concerns, hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, incidents, and safety concerns.
Complete minor repairs as directed.
Help keep the building and property safe and secure during the shift, follow YMCA safety procedures, and remain aware of surroundings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
