About The Position

The Custodian III helps ensure YMCA facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for members, guests, staff, and the community. This active, hands-on position involves cleaning and maintaining assigned areas independently and as part of a team, following cleaning schedules and safety procedures, and reporting maintenance or safety concerns. Custodians may work in high-traffic areas while the YMCA is open and active, respond to unexpected facility needs, and travel to other Crossroads YMCA branches within Lake County as needed. The schedule is flexible and may include afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays. Pay starts at $14.25 and increases based on experience.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years old.
Ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to read and understand cleaning instructions, procedures, manuals, and safety information.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Ability to travel to other Crossroads YMCA branches within Lake County as needed.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
Ability to occasionally stoop, bend, and use a ladder.
Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to safely perform custodial responsibilities.
Ability to safely work with cleaning products, solvents, and chemicals.
Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to maintain alertness, concentration, and initiative throughout the shift.
Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

Nice To Haves

Six months or more of related custodial or cleaning experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, floors, and other assigned spaces.
Mop, vacuum, dust, wash windows, remove trash, and perform general facility cleaning.
Clean around and at the bases of exercise equipment.
Complete housekeeping laundry as needed.
Refill disinfectant bottles and restock custodial closets and supplies.
Assist with seasonal responsibilities, including snow removal and other general facility needs.
Follow daily cleaning schedules and checklists to complete assigned tasks.
Safely use motorized and non-motorized cleaning equipment and properly handle cleaning products, chemicals, and supplies.
Help maintain assigned custodial equipment and work areas.
Identify and report needed repairs, maintenance concerns, hazardous conditions, incidents, safety concerns, or damaged equipment.
Complete minor repairs as directed.
Help ensure the YMCA building and property remain safe and secure during the shift.
Follow YMCA safety procedures and cleaning protocols, and remain aware of surroundings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
