About The Position

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Resort and Hospitality Management Department is seeking a reliable, organized, and motivated student to serve as the Culinary Lab Student Assistant. This individual will work alongside the Culinary Lab Manager to support daily operation, organization, safety, and cleanliness of the university’s culinary lab facilities. Most responsibilities will involve laundry, inventory, receiving deliveries, cleaning, and organizing the culinary lab space. The student may also assist with departmental events, food preparation, and occasional administrative projects as needed. No previous culinary or hospitality experience is required. Training will be provided. Students from all academic programs are encouraged to apply. Through this position, the student will strengthen transferrable workplace skills such as reliability, initiative, organization, time management, communication, inventory control, event support, and maintaining professional work environments.

Requirements

  • Must be an enrolled FGCU student in good standing at the time of hire and throughout the term of employment.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study funds.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and complete the physical duties of the position.
  • Must be willing to complete an approved food-handler certification after hire if a current certification is not already held.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and consistent follow-through.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to perform routine, hands-on tasks.
  • Ability to learn established procedures and complete recurring responsibilities independently after training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Clear and professional communication with faculty, staff, students, delivery personnel, and guests.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Initiative in recognizing tasks that need attention while knowing when to ask questions or seek guidance.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word, or the willingness to learn them.
  • Ability to adjust priorities based on changing lab, class, and event needs.
  • Responsible use for university equipment, supplies, and storage areas.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain culinary lab laundry, including distributing, collecting, washing, drying, folding or hanging, and organizing culinary shirts, aprons, and other assigned items.
  • Assist with maintaining clean, sanitary, safe, and organized culinary lab, storage rooms, laundry area, and support spaces.
  • Organize equipment, small-wares, ingredients, supplies, and departmental materials.
  • Assist with routine inventory counts, update inventory spreadsheets accurately, and report low stock, damaged items, or organizational concerns to the Culinary Lab Manager.
  • Receive deliveries and assist with inspecting, transporting, organizing, labeling, rotating, and properly storing products and supplies.
  • Assist with occasional administrative tasks, including work on Excel and Word.
  • Support departmental events through preparation, setup, food production, guest service, breakdown, cleaning, and resetting the space, as scheduling permits.
  • Complete recurring responsibilities independently after training and communicate questions or concerns to the Culinary Lab Manager.
  • Perform other related duties that support the safe, organized, and effective operation of the culinary lab.
