About The Position

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) delivers the infrastructure and foundational technologies that support Microsoft’s online services, including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. The Critical Environment Program Manager – Metrology owns delivery and continuous improvement of the data center metrology program across supported locations. This includes governance for calibration and verification of critical mechanical, electrical, environmental, and life-safety instrumentation; reliable, traceable measurement results; and standardized procedures, methods, documentation, and measurement-uncertainty expectations. The role manages instrument registration, calibration histories and due dates, work orders, execution monitoring, review of calibration results and certificates, and remediation of out-of-tolerance conditions. It leads metrology projects and audits, provides performance reporting, identifies and addresses measurement-system and infrastructure vulnerabilities, and supports cost and energy efficiency. The position also develops training and qualification pathways, assesses competency, mentors engineers and technicians, and promotes safety, security, compliance, and Microsoft’s culture and values.

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or technical college degree in Computer Science, Math, Telecommunications, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related field and 8+ years of experience in critical environment infrastructures or physical IT infrastructures; or high school qualification or equivalent and 10+ years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Applicable certifications such as APICS/Inventory Control, CompTIA, Microsoft, network certifications, CCNA, ITIL v3 Foundation, or Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) certifications.
  • 6+ months of experience working with building cooling, electrical, mechanical, and life-safety systems.
  • 6+ months of experience with Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Branch Circuit Monitoring (BCM), and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • 2+ years of project management experience or relevant project management certification/training.
  • 2+ years of experience working on large-scale projects.
  • Experience supporting an instrument calibration and verification program, including measurement traceability, measurement uncertainty, calibration intervals, tolerances, test uncertainty, and instrument registration and history in enterprise software.
  • Training in calibration and verification principles and methods, data center safety and security requirements, and NFPA 70E electrical safety or a local equivalent.
  • Experience calibrating or verifying critical-environment instrumentation, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, differential pressure, and electrical input/output devices, using appropriate reference standards, test points, and as-found/as-left data.
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements for testing and calibration laboratories, including personnel competence, traceability, measurement uncertainty, method control, technical records, and validity of results.
  • Experience administering calibration work through enterprise software, including instrument registration, work-order execution, calibration due-date control, certificate and record review, pass/fail assessment, and coordination of internal or vendor calibration activities.
  • Experience developing calibration procedures, job aids, and technical training, and coaching engineers or technicians in consistent execution of instrument calibration and verification activities.

Responsibilities

  • Establish strong working relationships with customers.
  • Own delivery and continuous improvement of the data center metrology program, including calibration and verification governance for critical mechanical, electrical, environmental, and life-safety instrumentation.
  • Manage preventive maintenance, calibration, verification, and out-of-tolerance remediation for electrical and mechanical equipment instrumentation.
  • Use enterprise software to register instruments, maintain calibration histories and due dates, and issue and assign calibration, verification, and corrective work orders.
  • Monitor work execution, review certificates and as-found/as-left results, and verify that completed work meets approved procedures, tolerances, traceability, and documentation standards.
  • Ensure equipment and associated instrumentation provide accurate, reliable, and traceable measurement results.
  • Establish and maintain standardized metrology governance, procedures, calibration methods, documentation, traceability, and measurement-uncertainty expectations across supported data center locations.
  • Act as an escalation point for metrology issues, including overdue calibration, out-of-tolerance conditions, emergency support, technician coaching, and instrument-selection recommendations; escalate significant operational risks as needed.
  • Lead metrology projects from conception through completion, including instrument onboarding, calibration-capability deployment, procedure development, laboratory or vendor readiness, and digitization of calibration records and workflows.
  • Report on critical infrastructure and metrology performance, including calibration compliance, overdue work, out-of-tolerance events, vendor performance, operational and maintenance KPIs, objectives, and adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Drive cost and energy efficiency projects.
  • Identify single points of failure at regional data center locations.
  • Coordinate audits against process standards, including calibration records, traceability, measurement uncertainty, instrument status, technician competency, vendor controls, and compliance verification.
