About The Position

We have two roles in the Criminal Courts and Sentencing data & statistics (CCSDS) team, within the Analysis Directorate. The roles are based within the Courts and People unit, which brings together analysts and data experts from across data assets and platforms. Their remit spans courts and prison, probation and judiciary, workforce data and statistics. The teams work closely with both policy and operational colleagues, communication teams and other departments. The roles are available in the Criminal Court Performance team (x1) and Criminal Justice Outcomes and Sentencing team (x1), within the wider Criminal Courts and Sentencing Data & Statistics (CCSDS) G6 Team. The postholders will join a high profile and exciting area of work – leading efforts to improve our data, publish high quality and high value statistical publications as well as drawing sound and impactful insight from our data to help decision makers in the department and across government. The teams deliver a range of data and analysis which is used to monitor criminal court processes and efficiency, understand the backlog and emerging trends in sentencing outcomes, to make policy response decisions for the needs of courts and to help plan and forecast upcoming challenges. It is also responsible for the National Statistics series ‘Criminal Court Statistics Quarterly’ and ‘Criminal Justice Statistics Quarterly’ as well as supplying large amounts of data to the rest of the analytical community in MOJ and beyond.

Requirements

  • Experience using software such as Excel, R and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Experience of delivery within an analytical or statistical team.
  • Analytical ability – in particular robust quality assurance, ability to analyse data and draw sound inferences from it.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to influence stakeholders using sound analysis.
  • The ability to make sound judgments and to present the results of your analysis to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise your workload and develop solutions in tight timelines, often with competing demands.
  • Possess a numerate degree or a degree that has an analytical, statistical or research element, with a 2:2 or above, or as a higher degree (e.g. MSc, PhD).
  • Alternatively, have significant experience evidencing use of data and/or analytical skills (outside of a part-completed Civil Service degree apprenticeship).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of criminal court data systems such as Libra, XHIBIT and Common Platform.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system
  • Ability to act on own initiative and understanding of when to involve others.
  • Familiarity with data visualisation tools such as PowerBI or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of data for a range of key uses including policy, operation, press and private office.
  • Delivering analysis with insight across the whole criminal court system and support this by developing key relationships with a range of policy and analytical teams.
  • Engage with and improve the criminal courts data pipeline – support the team in delivering new insight, filling evidence gaps and expanding the range of stakeholders our data can reach.
  • Collaborate with data experts and data specialists across the analytical community to answer questions (MOJ and HMCTS).
  • Improve our outputs including clear storytelling in line with best practice and work towards more engaging self-service data tools to deliver timely and accessible insight for users.
  • Lead the frequent drafting and contribution to parliamentary questions and freedom of information requests coming into the team.
  • Play a key role in supporting the innovation of our data processes and embedding more automation to better service user needs.
