About The Position

The Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University is seeking a Course Lecturer to teach AFRI 401: Swahili Language and Culture during the Fall 2026 term. This course aims to equip students with fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Kiswahili, covering basic grammatical structures. Additionally, it will offer a comprehensive introduction to Swahili culture, history, and the societies where the language is prevalent. Kiswahili serves as a lingua franca in Kenya and Tanzania and is widely spoken across the African Great Lakes region and Southeast Africa, including countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree minimum.
  • Solid background and demonstrated experience in teaching Swahili.
  • Authorized to work in Canada.
  • Willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based/located.
  • Proficiency in English communication, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Teach AFRI 401: Swahili Language and Culture in the Fall 2026 term.
  • Provide students with a solid foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the basic grammatical structures of Kiswahili.
  • Offer students a strong introduction to Swahili culture, history, and the societies in which the language is spoken.
