About The Position
The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a Corrections Plumbing Trade Instructor who is energized by teaching and practical problem-solving. This position lets you lead structured training that supports the efficient operation of the State Correctional Institution(SCI) at Somerset. You will help inmates build discipline, trade knowledge, and productive work habits. This opportunity brings purpose, stability, and the chance to support real vocational progress. This position provides classroom and hands-on instruction in the plumbing trade to support skill development and facility operations at SCI Somerset. The role focuses on guiding inmates through structured learning in standard trade practices.
Requirements
- Five years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, repair, assembly, and installation of pipes, fittings, and fixtures used in heating, water, and drainage systems; or Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the plumbing trade; or An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the plumbing trade.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- Meet the PA residency requirement.
- Able to perform essential job functions.
- Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
Responsibilities
- Teach plumbing practices for systems including water distribution, drainage, heating, fire sprinklers, and building plumbing
- Lead inmate work crews, assign daily schedules, and inspect completed plumbing tasks
- Issue, inventory, and account for tools and materials used during training and work assignments
- Determine required materials, submit purchase requests, and prepare for plumbing projects
- Select teaching approaches based on project needs, inmate skill levels, and learning progress
- Maintain training documentation, attendance lists, and assignment details
