About The Position

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an innovative and committed Corrections Activities Specialist to join the team at State Correctional Facility (SCI) Forest. This role focuses on coordinating and guiding recreational and leisure programming for inmates, supporting personal growth, wellness, and structured engagement. The specialist will plan and run structured activities, wellness programs, sports, and recreational opportunities, provide guidance and coaching in athletics, officiating, and physical education, and assist in program administration, goal setting, evaluation, and reporting. The position also involves monitoring recreation areas, managing equipment, overseeing inmate assistance, conducting assessments to identify inmate interests and measure program effectiveness, and recommending budgets and supplies.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree with major course work in recreation and physical education; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and run structured activities, wellness programs, sports, and recreational opportunities
  • Provide guidance, demonstrations, and coaching in athletics, officiating, and physical education
  • Assist in setting goals, evaluating programs, preparing reports, and maintaining required records
  • Monitor recreation areas, manage equipment inventories, and oversee inmate assistance with setup and cleanup
  • Conduct assessments to identify inmate interests and measure the effectiveness of activities
  • Recommend budgets, request supplies, and supervise staff or volunteers who help deliver programs
