About The Position

This position reports directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager at a multi-custody female correctional facility and provides first-line supervision for Correctional Officer III’s. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures, and/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provided supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Account for people and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post, overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
