About The Position

The Vermont Department Of Corrections is looking for a Facility Shift Supervisor for Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington. This position supervises and directs correctional security and operations during an assigned shift, ensuring appropriate levels of inmate activity are maintained in accordance with custody and security requirements. The role also involves assisting in the selection, orientation, and training of subordinate staff, arranging duty schedules, assigning staff to duty stations, and ensuring adequate coverage. The supervisor will conduct frequent inspection tours to ensure policy and procedure adherence, develop and implement plans for unusual incidents, review disciplinary reports, conduct special investigations, and oversee inmate admissions and transports. Additionally, the position directs responses to emergencies, assumes control in the absence of superiors, performs crisis intervention with Seriously Functionally Impaired (SFI) inmates, and plans/coordinates care for Delayed Placement Persons (DPP).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher AND two (2) or more years of work experience INCLUDING one (1) year in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
  • OR Associates degree AND four (4) or more years of work experience INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
  • OR High school diploma or equivalent AND five (5) or more years of work experience, INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
  • OR Four (4) or more years of military experience AND one (1) or more years in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • Previous institutional employers will be contacted and required to provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse.
  • Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs correctional security and operations during an assigned shift.
  • Ensures that appropriate levels of inmate activity are maintained in accordance with custody and security requirements.
  • Assists in the selection of subordinate staff and in their orientation and training.
  • Arranges duty schedules, assigns staff to duty stations, and ensures adequate coverage of all areas of the facility.
  • Conducts frequent inspection tours to ensure that department policies and facility procedures relating to security and operations are correctly and consistently applied.
  • Develops and implements plans for control of unusual incidents such as disturbances, fires, or attempted escapes.
  • Reviews disciplinary reports on inmates and hears inmate appeals.
  • Conducts special investigations as assigned.
  • Conducts regular Performance Management Interviews (PMI) with subordinate staff and provides feedback.
  • Ensures that all staff are trained in and aware of new policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the admission of new inmates and the transport of inmates outside of the facility.
  • Directs responses to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Assumes control of the assigned facility in the absence of superiors.
  • Performs crisis intervention with Seriously Functionally Impaired (SFI) inmates as required.
  • Plans and coordinates care and supervision of Delayed Placement Persons (DPP) until a psychiatric bed becomes available.
  • Performs related duties as required.
