About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position will function in the Programs section at a medium custody male correctional facility. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Carrying a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, answering and following up on offenders’ questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. 2. Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating. 3. Maintaining records and recall system. 4. Answering phones and typing records and correspondences.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.
