About The Position

Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for conducting initial assessments of offender needs and developing case plans, monitoring for compliance and results, and revising as appropriate to meet offender needs and achieve system objectives. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Assess offender behavior and develop counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
  • Answer offender questions, provide information about classification, sentencing status and correspond with offender’s families providing supportive counseling.
  • Organize and direct activities of various rehabilitation programs.
  • Conduct work release and home leave investigations, coordinating community resources, and planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Make recommendations to the offender classification committees on an offenders program involvement or custody level change.
  • Work with offenders whose problems, needs, and comprehension levels vary greatly.
  • Work in all sections of a Close, Medium, and Minimum Custody prison facility, which places them in constant contact with offenders.
  • Serve in a custody role during certain activities and working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
