About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody & Operations at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Housing Unit Manager I’s. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Assuming responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit. Providing leadership and guidance to subordinate staff and ensuring staff are alert, properly trained, informed and prepared to perform their job responsibilities under a variety of conditions. Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Managing a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed. Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders. Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations. Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders. Conducting and/or supervise searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband. Investigating and acting when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff. Serving on a variety of institutional committees as needed.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND five years of correctional experience, two of which must have been at supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented report writing skills.
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.
