About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and other divisions focused on healthcare, rehabilitation, and reentry. The agency has a mission that matters. This position reports to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II at a multi-custody female correctional facility and is responsible for the first-line supervision of Correctional Officer II's. The role involves ensuring the custody, security, and welfare of offenders, managing facility operations in the absence of higher-ranking staff, and maintaining facility security through regular inspections. Effective communication during drills, searches, and emergencies is crucial, as is responding to emergency situations and investigating security issues.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures (SOPs) and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
  • Communicating effectively instructions/directions during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
