About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions. The Correctional Sergeant II position is located at a multi-custody female correctional facility and reports to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II. This role involves the first-line supervision of Correctional Officers II.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance, ensuring offender custody, security, and welfare.
  • Coordinating work schedules for shift coverage, implementing SOPs, and ensuring policy adherence.
  • Managing the facility as the highest-ranking custody staff on premises or Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Ensuring staff are fully trained and follow proper conduct, actions, and procedures.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections for compliance with regulations regarding facility maintenance, health, and offender safety.
  • Communicating instructions effectively during drills, searches, and emergencies.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and offender transportation.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches for contraband in offender areas.
  • Investigating and taking appropriate action on security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing, reviewing reports, and completing performance evaluations for subordinate staff.
