About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is primarily responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer IIs. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

  • Documented knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures and/or Facility Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff to an area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to DAC policy.
  • Managing a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
  • Responding to situations such as, distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders, and communicating effectively instructions/directions during emergency situations, drills and searches.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and acting when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
