About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions. The Correctional Sergeant III position is a first-line supervisory role at a multi-custody female correctional facility, reporting directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or Correctional Housing Unit Manager. This role involves supervising Correctional Officers III, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, and managing various operational aspects of the facility.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff and overseeing Correctional Officer activities and performance.
  • Arranging work schedule rules to ensure staff coverage.
  • Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to DAC policy and procedures.
  • Giving direction during drills, searches, and emergencies.
  • Referring offenders to Restrictive Housing for temporary assignment as needed.
  • Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s) as needed.
  • Responding to emergency situations, searching for escaped offenders, and transporting offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
  • Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducting staff briefing sessions.
