About The Position

This position is assigned to Pasquotank Correctional Institution located in Elizabeth City, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
  • Implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Supervise more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II.
  • Ensure that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
  • Give direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • May refer inmates to restrictive housing for temporary assignment.
  • May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Respond to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigate and take action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Prepare and review a variety of reports.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and assist in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conduct staff briefing sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
