About The Position

The Cook performs a variety of moderately difficult duties under general supervision to prepare and cook food items served in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s retail food service operations. The position reports to the Chef. Duties may include serving food and beverages, preparing and cooking menu items, following food orders, and portioning, arranging, and garnishing food. The Cook may also coordinate and supervise other food service employees, serve food at food stands, and perform cashier duties.

Requirements

• Culinary school and/or experience working in a full-service restaurant.
• Knowledge of techniques, equipment, basic food handling, preparation, and cooking skills.
• Knowledge of proper preparation and cooking methods for a wide variety of food items.
• Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment and utensils.
• Knowledge of sanitation and safety methods for food preparation and handling.
• Knowledge of basic inventory controls.
• Effective leadership skills.
• Ability to cook and bake food in large quantities.
• Ability to operate commercial equipment and utensils.
• Ability to understand recipes and menus.
• Ability to evaluate and determine food condition, doneness, and decorations.
• Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
• Ability to keep simple records.
• Ability to supervise and train kitchen helpers.
