The Cook’s primary responsibility is to help ensure the restaurant maintains its reputation for serving good food. Cooks measure, mix, and cook ingredients according to recipes, using a variety of kitchen equipment. The role also supervises kitchen staff and maintains cleanliness in areas where duties are performed. Typical duties include reviewing daily preparation lists and priorities, preparing listed ingredients, cooking food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner services, labeling and storing remaining ingredients, cleaning work and surrounding areas, and preparing food and ingredients for the next shift. The Cook ensures ingredients are available and the kitchen is well supplied, communicates with the executive chef, direct supervisor, and other staff, and logs in and out at the beginning and end of each shift. Work takes place in various locations in a hotel restaurant kitchen. Most work areas are well lit and air conditioned, and cooking areas have nonslip floor mats. The Cook may be exposed to high and low temperatures near grills and ovens or when using walk-in refrigeration and freezer areas. Shift times vary with facility needs; some positions are full time and some are part time. Overtime is required as needed.
