About The Position

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Guelph is seeking a one-year contractually limited Assistant Professor with a focus on teaching. This role is designed to enhance instructional capacity and ensure continuity in core ECE curriculum areas, which are essential for accredited engineering programs and the development of CEAB graduate attributes. The department is committed to delivering high-quality instruction in large, multi-section courses and maintaining pedagogical consistency throughout the academic year. Specific course assignments will depend on scheduling needs, covering areas such as foundational electrical engineering, computer engineering and embedded systems, and programming and computational skills. The ideal candidate will be adept at engaging diverse student groups in large, interdisciplinary classes and contributing to uniform learning outcomes across different sections and terms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in ECE.
  • Doctorate (PhD) in Engineering by the start date of the appointment.
  • Excellent teaching track record.
  • Evidence of effective instruction in settings such as large lectures, laboratories, tutorials, workshops, and design- or project-based learning environments.
  • Ability to engage diverse student cohorts in large, interdisciplinary classes.
  • Ability to contribute to consistent learning outcomes across sections and terms.
  • Submit a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, approach, interests, and experience.
  • Provide evidence of successful teaching (e.g., peer evaluations, teaching awards, unsolicited student feedback).
  • Identify instructional areas qualified and willing to teach.
  • Submit a statement demonstrating commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in teaching and learning.

Nice To Haves

  • University-level teaching experience (beyond a teaching assistant role) is preferred.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (or another Canadian province or territory), or clear eligibility for registration, is considered an asset.
  • Prior experience teaching large and/or multi-section courses.
  • Readiness to contribute to consistent delivery across multiple sections and terms.
  • Optional: Statement of research interests aligned with a teaching-focused role.

Responsibilities

  • Teach across a subset of instructional clusters including foundational courses (electric circuits, electrical engineering, communication systems fundamentals), computer engineering and embedded systems (computer organization/architecture, hardware–software interface, embedded systems, FPGA-oriented computing), and programming and computational skills (introductory programming, engineering software tools).
  • Normally be assigned six (6) teaching assignments over the appointment period.
  • Devote remaining effort to service and curricular contributions supporting program delivery.
  • Contribute to instructional planning.
  • Engage in course coordination activities that support consistency across sections.
  • Participate in teaching initiatives.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of core curriculum delivery.
  • Serve on department or college-level committees.
