About The Position

Tech Safari is hiring a full-time, mid-level Content Lead to write the weekly feature edition of its flagship newsletter, edit work by newer writers and freelancers, and partner with the Head of Growth and Editorial on what the publications cover next. The role reports to the Head of Growth and Editorial and is described as their closest editorial partner, with responsibility for making editorial calls, maintaining quality, and helping shape newsletter growth. The Content Lead will report on the business and economy of African technology across fintech, logistics, energy, health, agritech, policy, and capital, covering West, East, North, and Southern Africa. The position is remote and open to candidates anywhere in Africa, with a preference for Nairobi or Abuja. The company would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible. Tech Safari is a media and business company whose portfolio includes Tech Safari, Ag Safari, and The Big Move, as well as Talent Safari and the Tech Safari Summit and Ag Safari Summit. The role will involve closely reading the three publications and helping maintain consistent voice and standards where they overlap. Candidates must complete a writing task; the company will track both the writing process and the final draft. AI tools may be used for research, transcription, and administrative work, but published writing must be the candidate’s own.

Requirements

  • At least four years of experience writing about business, technology, or economics.
  • Published work that the candidate personally reported and wrote.
  • Experience editing other people’s writing, such as as an editor, section lead, or colleague reviewing drafts.
  • Existing contacts in African tech and the ability to reach founders, investors, or policy officials when needed.
  • Understanding of how African tech companies make money, raise money, and fail, and the ability to explain this clearly to non-specialists.
  • Ability to meet deadlines without being chased and to communicate early when a story is at risk.
  • Clear written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to disagree with an editor constructively.
  • Strong writing skills; drafts must be the candidate’s own, and candidates must be comfortable demonstrating this in a writing task.
  • Curiosity about podcasts, video, and other media, with opinions on what makes them effective.
  • Ability to adapt quickly when stories, plans, or formats change.
  • Familiarity with Tech Safari, Ag Safari, and The Big Move before applying.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on a newsletter and understanding how open rates, replies, and subscriber growth respond to editorial choices.
  • Comfort working with funding data, company reports, and simple spreadsheets, and turning numbers into a clear argument.
  • Reporting experience in more than one African market.
  • Experience with beehiiv or a similar newsletter platform.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write Tech Safari’s weekly feature edition, filing on time each week.
  • Write at least one edition of The Big Move each month.
  • Find and develop stories using original sources, company filings, funding data, and conversations with founders, investors, operators, and regulators.
  • Cover a range of African technology subsectors and regions so coverage is not concentrated in one country or type of company.
  • Edit Tech Safari’s weekly roundup, This Week in African Tech, before publication.
  • Edit pieces from junior writers and freelance contributors, giving feedback that helps them improve.
  • Help review pitches submitted through the open pitch programme.
  • Work with the Head of Growth and Editorial to develop new formats, content pillars, and approaches to increasing newsletter engagement.
  • Reply to readers who contact the team about editions and use their feedback to improve future editions.
  • Offer editorial judgment about how Tech Safari journalism could work as podcasts, video, and other formats; hosting or producing these formats is not expected.
  • Read Tech Safari, Ag Safari, and The Big Move closely and help keep their voices and standards consistent where they overlap.
  • Meet deadlines, flag risks early, and adapt when stories break, plans change, or formats are not working.
