About The Position

This role is for a Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join the Construction Services team in Nashville, Tennessee, supporting the KY Locke project in Paducah, KY. The position involves testing concrete, soils, and asphalt to ensure the quality and safety of construction projects. S&ME is a leading civil engineering and consulting firm with over 50 years of experience in geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing. As a technician, you will perform field and laboratory testing, collect and prepare samples, interpret results, and report findings. You will collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure compliance with specifications and safety guidelines. The role requires working outdoors on construction sites, with potentially varying schedules including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime. Travel is required for the project, with per diem provided. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, walking on uneven terrain, standing for extended periods (up to 12 hours), and lifting 40-50 pounds. A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are necessary to operate a company vehicle.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
Basic math proficiency, including understanding of measurements and units of weight.
Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel.
A valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs.
Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment.
Valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Nice To Haves

Previous experience working in construction is preferred.
Associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels.
Active Industry certifications such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I, strongly preferred; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector, Reinforced Concrete and Masonry.
Prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus (for Technician IV).

Responsibilities

Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.
