About The Position

The Conservation Programs Officer (CPO) is the central resource in supporting the successful delivery of Cree Nation Government’s conservation-related initiatives such as the development conservation proposals, conservation plans, assisting in the Environmental and Social Assessment process, management development and implementation. The position requires the CPO to be the liaison with Cree community representatives and Cree entities as well as being responsible for the delivery of other reports and ad-hoc data requests.

Requirements

  • College diploma in Administration and/or Geography, Planning and Environment.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in conservation or protected areas with emphasis on complex, inter-departmental funding administration, data management, financial data management and analysis.
  • Fluency in verbal Cree.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Proven organizational skills and to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and ability with Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills.
  • Working knowledge of accounting.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate strong judgment in complex situations.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve, to think strategically, and to take initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under significant pressure and to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Typical office setting where there are no unusual physical demands.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
  • Must agree to undergo a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Manager of Protected Areas (MPA) with the identification of priorities for the various conservation projects, terrestrial and marine.
  • Support the Marine Conservation Coordinator with the implementation of marine and coastal conservation projects.
  • Coordinate and complete projects on time and within the appropriate budget and scope.
  • Provide support with communication plans on conservation initiatives to the communities.
  • Coordinate logistics in regard to community consultations with land users and tallymen for example, translation services.
  • Develop and maintain good relations with Cree communities and organizations, key stakeholders and external consultants, to facilitate the development of conservation projects, ESIA process, management development.
  • Respond to requests for technical support in the evaluation for needs for consultation projects, the review of studies and the preparation and evaluation of documents required for local projects.
  • Promote ongoing, effective, and open communication with Cree communities and organizations.
  • Assist in the completion of the protected area network, such as the development of conservation plans and ESIA, and its management through collaboration with consultants and other experts such as anthropologists and consultations with the communities, Cree Nation Government departments and stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance towards the project management and coordination of conservation projects with the Cree local administration when requested or required.
  • Set deadlines and monitor and summarize progress of the projects.
  • Engage in and/or manage specific research initiatives so as to improve the existing on cultural, environmental and wildlife information.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and support to communities in relation to the responsibilities at the local level for all matters relating to conservation initiatives.
  • Respond to requests for technical support in the evaluation for needs for projects, the review of studies and the preparation and evaluation of documents required for local projects (terms of reference, evaluation of bids, selection of candidates, etc.).
  • Collaborate with MPA on all transactions, expenses, invoices, and payments for material and equipment and ensure it is in compliance with official financial processes and procedures.
  • Prepare status reports and monitor expenditures for projects and take necessary actions to ensure each project is completed within the allocated budget and timeline, while ensuring to report any issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.
