About The Position

The Community Ministry Worker provides support to the food bank program provided by The Salvation Army Sudbury Community and Family Services. This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, with an anticipated start date of July 7, 2024. The role involves assisting with client intake, processing donations, maintaining the food bank, and registering children for camping programs. The position requires adherence to health and safety standards and involves physical tasks such as reaching, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 30 lbs. The work environment is typically in an office and food bank setting during regular business hours, Monday to Friday.

Requirements

  • Completion of a minimum of grade ten (10).
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License.
  • Provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract for review and verification.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a vulnerable sector check search.
  • Ability and willingness to provide a valid Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Applicant criteria for Canada Summer Jobs Program: aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; a valid Social Insurance Number; be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Safe Food Handling and First Aid/CPR Certifications are an asset.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training preferred.
  • Knowledge of barriers confronted by people who are disenfranchised, including, but not limited to people living in poverty, with mental health concerns, addictions and/or experiencing homelessness is an asset.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with community based agencies is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting intake services and client assessment to determine immediate needs and supports required by the client.
  • Refer clients to Community Services Program Coordinator or Corps Officer.
  • Assist other food bank staff with pick-ups of food/toy donations from community donors.
  • Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, sorting, reorganizing, and re-stocking food and toy donations for the Family Services program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
  • Maintain food bank stock, cleanliness, tidiness, and organization of the food bank area; assist with food drives as needed.
  • Arrange for the proper disposal of items received but not usable in the food bank.
  • Assist with registering children and youth for The Salvation Army provincial camping programs.
  • Adhere to all health and safety standards.
  • Assist with ensuring that the Food Bank is maintained in organization, appearance, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
