The Communications Operator receives and relays telephone traffic in a timely, efficient, courteous manner; operates the public address system; and activates alert systems during emergencies. The role monitors light and sound alarms, dispatches appropriate repair or emergency response resources, and supports a safe environment while following patient-information and visiting restrictions. The operator is also responsible for departmental documentation and participation in requested education, service, performance-improvement, accreditation, and customer-service activities. The position requires 4–6 weeks of full-time training across first, second, and third shifts. The physical demands include sitting for seven to nine hours a day, some walking and lifting, and lifting up to 20 pounds. The operator must have the mobility to move around the hospital and between workstations, and the coordination, verbal skills, and corrected vision and hearing needed to operate telephone and switchboard equipment and respond to callers and emergencies.
