About The Position

The College Care Advisor plays a vital role in supporting undergraduate student success within the College of Sciences, with a primary focus on psychology majors and minors. This position provides comprehensive academic advising while serving as a key contributor to the launch and ongoing success of the Psychology bachelor’s degree program at SDSU’s Chula Vista location. With a regular on-site presence at Southwestern College, the role supports transfer and upper-division students while collaborating closely with faculty, the College of Sciences Student Success Center, and campus partners. Blending advising, program development, and cross-campus coordination, this is an exciting opportunity for a student-centered professional passionate about supporting diverse learners in a multi-site academic environment.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic background or professional experience in the sciences or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting, such as admissions, academic advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student services–related offices is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and supporting diverse student populations is preferred.
  • Experience delivering presentations to audiences of varying sizes and backgrounds is preferred.
  • Experience preparing written reports, summaries, or program documentation is preferred.
  • Experience updating and maintaining websites or web-based content is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising on degree requirements, course selection, academic planning, and university policies for psychology majors and minors.
  • Serve as the primary advisor supporting the launch and implementation of the Psychology program at SDSU Chula Vista.
  • Manage moderately complex advising cases, including transfer articulation, academic standing concerns, and nontraditional pathways.
  • Develop and implement student success initiatives, workshops, and communication strategies to promote retention and timely graduation.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners while providing guidance and support to peer advisors.
