Requirements

  • High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) required or relevant experience
  • Previous clerical and customer service experience required
  • Currently registered with the State of Wisconsin Registry for Nursing Assistants at the state and federal level.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology to understand ordering procedures for various patient tests, treatments and medications.
  • Possess and competently demonstrate core Nursing Assistant skills as outlined in the skills competency checklist. Understands role of performing delegated acts.
  • Possess willingness and initiative to successfully complete educational requirements and develop and learn new skills as required by the unit (i.e., phlebotomy, EKG, etc.)
  • Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact courteously and tactfully with patients, parents/families and members of the health care team.
  • Possess rudimentary assessment and analytical skills in order to perform basic patient observations.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk when assisting with errands, to carry supplies and move equipment on wheels, and to transport patients in wheelchairs and cribs.
  • Physical ability to lift, ambulate and position patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a health unit coordinator program or other healthcare office experience preferred
  • Previous basic computer and keyboarding experience and skills preferred
  • Certified Nursing Assistant certifications are not required to be renewed after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews charts and maintains medical records.
  • Records daily census record.
  • Creates a welcoming and comfortable environment for patients and visitors and keeps nursing station neat and orderly.
  • Answers unit telephones and transfers calls appropriately.
  • Utilizes hospital paging system to contact physicians and staff.
  • Responds to patient call light system.
  • Performs delegated patient care activities under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Assists RN and/or physician with patient treatments/procedures as directed. (Patient care activities related to: hygiene, physical cares, intake/nutrition, elimination, ambulation/exercise, routine vital signs/monitoring, respiratory, comfort measures, basic safety procedures.)
  • Measures, documents and appropriately reports observations made of patients or families. Any deviations or changes are verbally reported to the RN and documented in the patient's medical record (co-signed by the RN).
  • Provides personal care to patients, such as feeding, toileting, positioning and ambulation.
  • Answers patient call lights, prepares patient rooms for admissions, changes bed linens, checks and collects dietary trays and transports patients under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintains department supplies and equipment needed for patient care.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are stored appropriately.
  • Cleans equipment and supplies after use.
  • Reports any deficiencies or unsafe equipment to the RN or manager immediately.
  • Supports the unit environmental needs by maintaining cleanliness in the treatment room, isolation room, kitchen, patient care areas, supply areas, and the department in general.
  • Keeps the patient food refrigerator, medication refrigerator, and staff refrigerator clean and uncluttered.
  • Prepares room for Environmental Services cleaning (removes linens, equipment, food trays, and toys from room).
  • Acts as member of the unit team by providing such services as notifying personnel of admissions, keeping members apprised to changes that affect unit functioning, assisting in coverage for absent co-workers, acting as a preceptor to new Health Unit Coordinators and/or Nursing Assistants and staff, retrieving blood products from blood bank, etc.
