About The Position

Brock University is seeking a Clinical Nursing Instructor for the NURS 4L03 – BNMN - Nursing Foundations: Care of Families and Communities – Pediatrics course for the Fall 2026 term. This is a contract position for 9 weeks, with two 12-hour shifts per week. The instructor will report to the Undergraduate Clinical Supervisor and is responsible for preparing for and supervising students in a clinical setting, collaborating with the Course Instructor, preparing patient assignments, reviewing student preparation, encouraging evidence-based practice, facilitating communication, modeling patient-centered care, familiarizing students with policies and safety requirements, providing feedback, assessing reflections and learning plans, marking assignments, completing anecdotal notes, identifying and facilitating student plan development, facilitating student meetings and post-clinical conferences, fostering discussion and reflection, and adhering to confidentiality and privacy standards.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a BScN required
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experience as a nurse
  • Clinical work experience in inpatient hospital pediatrics within the last 10 years and/ or clinical teaching experience in inpatient hospital pediatrics within the last 10 years
  • Desire to instruct and share knowledge with nursing students
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Ability to address concerns and manage difficult situations, and to identify and act upon emergency situations
  • Effective organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Ability to provide a valid Police Record Check (E-PIC or VSC) prior to the contract start date, if required by clinical agency. The Police check must be no greater than 6 months old as of contract start date
  • Ability to meet the clinical site occupational and immunization requirements
  • Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing with no restrictions, conditions or limitations.

  • Previous experience as a preceptor or with clinical instruction would be an asset

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and supervise students in a clinical setting for the experiential component of the course.
  • Collaborate with the Course Instructor to ensure student activities are aligned with the course syllabus and learning objectives.
  • Prepare patient assignments before students’ arrival on the unit (for hospital placements) carefully considering each student’s experience level and capabilities and course learning objectives.
  • Review the student’s preparation and plan for their clinical activities with attention and integration of nursing, pathophysiological, pharmacologic, and therapeutic concepts.
  • Encourage an inquiring, theory, and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.
  • Facilitate interprofessional and intraprofessional communication among students and all members of the health care team or agency.
  • Model patient-centered care.
  • Familiarize students with the relevant policies and protocols in the clinical setting with emphasis on any health & safety requirements.
  • Provide ongoing verbal feedback to students and maintain a professional relationship with all learners.
  • Assess journal reflections, learning plans and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Mark all assignments designated as the responsibility of the Clinical Nursing Instructor in the syllabus.
  • Complete regular, comprehensive anecdotal notes regarding student progress and advise the course professor immediately of serious or ongoing student concerns.
  • Identify gaps and facilitate the development and implementation of student plans in partnership with the course instructor as required.
  • Facilitate student meetings / post-clinical conferences, and coordinate appropriate resources (e.g., multi-media).
  • Foster discussion and reflection to enhance a positive and respectful learning environment.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation.
